Die 31-jährige Amina Lawal war im März 2002 zum Tod durch Steinigung verurteilt worden, weil sie nach ihrer Scheidung ein Kind zur Welt gebracht hatte. Nach islamischen Recht gilt sie wegen der außerehelichen Schwangerschaft als Ehebrecherin. In einem ersten Berufungsprozess im August war das Urteil bestätigt worden. Der Fall hatte international zu heftigen Protesten geführt. Nigeria hatte die Scharia vor drei Jahren in zwölf Staaten wieder eingeführt.
Die Berufung gegen das Todesurteil sollte schließlich Ende März 2003 vor einem islamischen Gericht verhandelt werden, man hat die Entscheidung jedoch auf den 3. Juni aufgeschoben.
Bereits im Vorjahr konnte ein solches Urteil durch internationalen Druck aufgehoben werden, helfen Sie bitte auch diesmal mit:

I urgently ask you for your support and influence concerning a question of life and death.
I was informed by a press release of Mrs. Marilies Flemming MEP that a 30-year-old Nigerian mother, Mrs. Amina Lawal Kurami, was sentenced to death by stoning, on the 22nd of March 2002, for bearing a child “out of wedlock” after her divorce. Mrs. Amina Lawal Kurami has appealed against this sentence. By 3rd of Juni 2003, the Islamic Supreme Court of Appeal of Katsina will render their decision.
I would urge you to act in this matter. In a similar case on Mrs. Safiaya Hussaini Tungar-Tudu last year, the Nigerian appeal court reversed their sentence because of the mobilization and pressure by the international community.
Mrs. Flemming herself has informed Mrs. Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Pat Cox, President of the European Parliament, and all Austrian MEPs. In addition, she has written an open letter to the Islamic Association in Austria, Brussels and Strasbourg asking them to do the utmost to save the life of Mrs. Amina Lawal Kurami.
I respectfully ask you to appeal for mercy to the competent authority of the State of Katsina in order to save the life of Mrs. Amina Lawal Kurami.
