Der große Gewinner der diesjährigen Game Awards heißt "Overwatch". Blizzards Multiplayer-Shooter wurde zum Spiel des Jahres gekürt und konnte insgesamt vier Kategorien für sich entscheiden. Der Splatter-Shooter "Doom", der Mobile-Hit "Pokémon Go", der dystopische Plattformer "Inside" und das Abenteuer "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" räumten jeweils zwei Auszeichnungen ab. Der Impact Award für Spiele mit einer besonders starken Aussage ging an das melancholische Spiel "That Dragon, Cancer", in dem ein Entwicklerpaar den Tod ihres kleinen Sohnes aufarbeiten. Komplett leer aus ging hingegen Electronic Arts populärer Weltkrieg-Shooter "Battlefield 1". Dabei war der Blockbuster gleich viermal nominiert.

Neben der Award-Verleihung wurde der Abend für diverse Spielvorstellungen genutzt. Zu sehen waren unter anderem neue Eindrücke der Spiele "Mass Effect Andromeda", "Zelda: Breath of the Wild" und "Death Stranding".
