Austrias DWDM infrastructure provider Memorex Telex Communications AG announced Wednesday the completion of its pan-SEE telecom network.

The network, interconnecting a host of Balkan cities - among which Istanbul, Sofia, Bucharest and Athens - with telecom nodes in Central and Western Europe, is intended for lease to local service providers.

Memorex said the network was the first to offer a land-based optical connection to Istanbul. Memorex provides Turkish telecom Turk Telecom with terrestrial connectivity via Bulgaria to Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam and New York at 10 GBs.

Since entry to Bulgaria late last year, the company has invested EUR 1.5 million into its wholesale leased lines network. Next year, it would add BGN 1 million in investments on telecom equipment leases.

The Austrian companys network is expected to directly rival with the pan-European voice and data network of Interoute. Recently, the latter said Bulgaria would serve as its outpost for further South-east European expansion.
